 Re: Opinions wanted...
Well damn I am in a delema...because I need a tube amp as well. not something too expensive. The Jet City JCA20H and JCA12S Half-Stack and the Vox AC4TV and V112TV Half Stack come to mind. D: in need of a new amp (Mine is a Fender 25R)

 Re: Opinions wanted...
You might check out a Fender Pro Jr or even a Blues Jr. Good for the bucks and Fender has tons of servicers available. I personally like the Pro Jr the best but it has no reverb. These can both be improved with selected tubes and changing the output transformer when you have extra bucks available later on. I also think the Epiphone amps can be OK buys though I had to replace the output transformer in my Electar 10. You can also still find occasional deals on older silverface Fenders but most need to be retubed and recapped before they sound good again. Beyond that old Trainors, Sunns or even Ampegs can still be had reasonably but there again they usually need a retube-recap job to bring them back to spec. The beauty of the above IMHO is that most all these amps work really well with FX pedals. I also love Vox and Marshall amps especially for their inherent tonal qualities but after many years playing it seems to me that the American brands really respond the best to FX pedals. I have a fairly large amp library but I bought them all broken and fixed them myself. I also have a Vox and a couple of Marshalls that I mainly use as flavoring these days when recording. Live I play a Pro Jr (with 10" JBL D110), Ampeg VT-40 or a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (I got at a ridiculously low price sounds good with pedals). My favorite amp of all time is my Ampeg Gemini II (from the mid 60's with a 15" alnico Jensen concertone) I keep it in my bedroom so I can play it when I am stuck in bed (it really is sweet) got it for my birthday 30 years ago. YMMV Matt

 Re: Opinions wanted...
the crate v series (yes, it is a tube series) is really good for the money but, the tone is very dark in these amps... so it's good for jazz and metal. I use a 10 band mxr EQ to balance that out so it's usuable, but I've been looking at a fender blues deluxe to replace the crate. I can upload a sound clip in a few days if you're interested in getting a V crate. Oh, and please don't bitch at me for getting a crate guys, it had the best sound and tone for the the $200 tag.
